DoorDash And Postmates Testing Self-Driving Robots For Deliveries

If you live in Redwood City, California or Washington, prepare for another excitement, since your next order for food or courier can be delivered by the robot.
DoorDash and Postmates, which are popular, provide product delivery and courier delivery services, respectively, have teamed up with the start-up of Startship Technologies, which makes robots.
Starship is a London-based and Estonian-based Robotics company, and it unveiled the launch of the pilot program on January 18. The program will put the self-managed robots to work in the US, which will provide supplies of products for the launch of DoorDash in Silicon Valley and courier deliveries for postmasters in Washington.
"We believe that our robots are revolutionizing local delivery. We see a world in which you can send and receive anything you want, anytime and anywhere, "the company said.
The partners of United States Starship have started tests with delivery robots, and the company claims that robots can complete deliveries in just 15-30 minutes.
Autonomous robots look like a pool of refrigerator and R2-D2 and basically help to transport goods from grocery and restaurants within a radius of two or three miles from the customer. These bots will help speed up the delivery process, making it less time consuming.
How do bots work?
Self-guided robots use cameras, software, GPS and proprietary company cards to help them navigate. In addition, it is expected that in the near future bots will help the elderly and people with mobility problems in accordance with their requirements.
During the testing period, robots collided with more than a million pedestrians confronted with problems.
The Starship robots were equipped to walk among the people on the sidewalk, and they also can travel at a speed of 4 miles per hour with a shipment of up to 40 pounds.
In addition, permission to provide services was provided to the company for delivery. Couriers are also fueled by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and programmed so that during operation they remain calm.
The robots are not completely autonomous, since the human operator will control the activity of the robots through the fleet management application. They depend on computer vision and road maps to drop the order to their assigned destination.
Self-propelled robots Starship do not fly, instead they help to prevent the possible risk of collision or damage.
Stanley Tan, co-founder of DoorDash, said that adding the latest technology to Starship does not mean that the company seeks to replace human labor. Instead, he intends to use robots to minimize minor supplies that are performed manually.
"We have people who use cars, bicycles, motor scooters, motorcycles or go to do the delivery, and each has its own strength and suitability for different supplies. Robots will be another type of car in our system, "Tan said.
